On those long, hot summer days, when the sun sets late in the evening, when the forests are filled with the scents of wild flowers, when a gentle breeze takes the edge off the soaring temperatures, it is without doubt the best time of the year for enjoying the vast array of footpaths and hiking trails in the forest. There are so many routes to choose from, all starting from the front door of the Baita.
LAKE TRET: IDEAL FOR WILD SWIMMING
In our opinion, the most scenic trail is the one leading to the beautiful Lake Tret, surrounded by the majestic pine forests of the upper Val di Non. Lying at an altitude of 1,600 m, this natural oasis is the perfect place to spend a few hours relaxing with friends or family.
From the Baita, take footpath number 517. After walking for around 90 minutes through peaceful forests and across broad flower-filled meadows, you come to this delightful Alpine lake.
When you get to the lake, you can choose to continue along the shore path, in search of somewhere quiet to eat your picnic, perhaps containing some local produce brought from the Baita.
How about a sandwich with local Mortandela cured sausage or a slice of Linzer Torte fresh from the bakery.
And if you get too hot, there is always the opportunity to cool off with a refreshing dip in the lake.
If you would rather get a taste for some authentic local cooking, follow the signs to the mountain lodges of Malga San Felice or Rifugio Waldruhe, famous for its mouthwatering desserts.
To the Top of Monte Macaion
If you want to go further, then why not take the chance to see more of the stunning landscape of the upper Val di Non by climbing to the summit of Monte Macaion: from the lake, follow footpath 511 for a short way, then turn onto path 500; after around 1 hour 45 mins you will reach the rounded summit (1,864 m). From the top there are breathtaking views over the Adige valley, the Dolomites and the Tessa and Sarentine ranges, ample reward for all your efforts!
They say that time is the most precious gift of all and without a shadow of a doubt this is a great way to make the most of it, choosing how you want to spend your precious holidays.
Whichever option you choose, you are guaranteed a good rest on your return: the solarium garden will be ready and waiting for the opportunity to soak up the final rays of sun on a peaceful and quiet evening. What more could you ask for?
